I assume you have a website, probably well designed to look beautiful. However, if your website is slow to load (above 3 seconds), the following will happen.
1. You will lose visitors and clients.
Assuming you perform a search for a particular topic on Google. When the search result is displayed, you see lots of websites. If you click on a website and it takes so long to load, I stake 500 bucks on it that you’ll return to the search results and click on another website. No one wants to wait forever for a website to load (unless it’s yours- hehehe ).
2. Your web page will be ranked lower.
Google announced in an effort to improve the web, that page speed was a consideration in how they rank websites in search results. Simply put, the higher the speed, the higher the ranking. In Physics terms, Your ranking on Google is directly proportional to your Speed.
That said, I’m going to show you how to speed up your website by almost 80%.
A fast website is Good for SEO, SEO is good for your product. Read up how to improve your website SEO and some vital SEO tools that are good for you.
The Speed-up Process
-Let’s cut the crap and turn down the hype.
What you fix when your house has foundation problems is the foundation and not the windows. In the same vein, if your website has speed problems and crawls, you don’t start by installing plugins that promise to speed up your website, no, You should fix the core.
Breaking It Down.
The core of the human body is the torso minus the appendages (legs, arms and head). The core or the torso of your website includes-
- Your Host.
- Your Theme (cms e.g WordPress)
Let’s take them one by one.
The speed and performance of your website depend so much on your web host. Choose a very fast and reliable web host. Below are some web hosts I recommend using.
- Siteground – Siteground is one of the best Web hosts in the world. It offers a very fast server response time and a 100% uptime hosting. I use Siteground on all my websites. Give them a try!
This is probably the best web hosting company in Nigeria and in Africa as a whole. They’ve got reasonable prices and awesome services. Their customer response is unbeatable. They are trusted by many top-notch companies including BetNaija, RCCG, Christ Embassy, Ebony tv, Lonadek est.
USE A GOOD THEME
These days designers build themes with so many bells and whistles, no wonder it takes almost 10 seconds to fully load. There are things to put in consideration while choosing a theme apart from it’s beauty. Factors such as speed, SEO and responsiveness are also very essential. Go for quality. Get a Premium theme.
As earlier said, the host and host and theme are the torso of the website. But there are appendages too!
Compress your website with gzip.
Gzip Compresses your website’s files into a zip format. This saves bandwidth and is faster on the user’s browser. You can enable gzip by adding the following code into your .httaccess file.
Use a cache Plugin.
According to venture harbour “If you’re using WordPress, one of the quickest and easiest ways to cut your page loading speed is to install a caching plugin like WP Total Cache or WP Super Cache. Both are free to download and very good.
Despite their name, caching plugins do quite a lot beyond browser caching, although that is their primary function. I’ll discuss the benefits and how to add browser caching in a second without a plugin, but for those using WordPress and looking to improve page speed quickly, it’s often easier to just install a plugin.”
Clean up your DB
WordPress stores up lots of stuff in your database that are not useful. You can clean up your database to speed up your website. Install WP optimize a plugin that does that job for you.
Fix Broken Links.
Broken links not only eat up your bandwidth, but it’s also the surest way to pursue your visitors away from your website. You can do this with Google webmasters tool.
Minify your CSS and JS
The second aspect of minifying involves deleting white space and making your files smaller.
If you’re using WordPress, WP Minify is a great plugin that automatically does all of this for you.
Replace PHP with Static HTML where Possible
PHP is great for making your site efficient and reducing the need to enter the same information multiple times. However, calling information through PHP uses up server resource and should be replaced with static HTML where it doesn’t save any time.
Uninstall Unused Plugins
Having lots of plugins on your websites can affect your page speed severely. Most plugins have their own Js and CSS files this reduces page load time.
