Howdy? It’s I. The guy who loads you with daily SEO tips. It’s 2018 and lots of things have changed.
The SEO / Internet marketing world is a very dynamic one. Every blogger or content creator wants to boost their ranking in Search Engine Result pages. Google is always making Algorithm changes and the market gets tougher every day.
SEO focuses on increasing your organic ranking and Click through rates (CTR) on Search engines. A recent study has shown that organic CTR has decreased by over 37% since 2015. Why this decline in organic CTR? Check out the images below.
Worst of them all:
What’re all these? Google is crowding out the organic search results with Answer Boxes, Ads, Carousels, “People also ask” sections and more. For your content to still stand out you need to apply EVERYTHING written down in this article. Ready? Let’s go!
Factor 1: RankBrain & User Experience Signals.
“RankBrain is a machine-learning artificial intelligence system that helps Google process some of its search results, in particular, rare or one-of-a-kind queries. It was launched in early 2015 and is used globally by Google. ” – Search Engine Land.
RankBrain is primarily focused on helping refine queries that Google processes, but the company says that the system is also used to help rank web pages. In fact, Google says RankBrain is its third most important ranking factor.
Google has always had one main goal – Providing users with the best results when they search for things on Google. Over the years there has been a multitude of algorithm changes.
Once upon a time, all you needed to rank your web pages was to stuff your article with keywords related to the query and you’ll get ranked quickly.
Now thanks to Rankbrain, Google now takes a different approach while fetching search results.
RankBrain simply measures how users interact with the search results…
…and ranks them accordingly.
For example, let’s say you search for “cold brew coffee” on Google.
Let’s say you click on the 4th result and immediately love what you see there. You devour the entire content, watch the videos in it.
Rankbrain takes note of this.
On the other hand, you perform the same search query but this time click on the first result instantly. But then the CONTENT on the website is terrible, so you bounce out of the page in seconds and move back to the 4th search result.
Rankbrain also notices this and will promote the 4th query to the #1 search result and demote the previous one.
Rankbrain focuses on two things.
1. How long someone spends on your page (Dwell Time)
2. The percentage of people that click on your result (Click Through Rate)
Let’s break down the following.
Dwell Time :
This is the amount of time a searcher spends on your website. Dwell time is an important SERPs ranking factor. Many SEO have begun to invest a lot of time into making sure people stay for a longer period of time on their websites.
The head of Google Brain in Canada recently confirmed that Google uses Dwell Time as a ranking signal. He stated that RankBrain measures when someone clicks on a page and stays on that page when they go back.
A recent research has also shown that the top 10 search results have an average of 3 minutes and 10 seconds dwell time.
It’s reasonable to say that when someone spends a lot of time on a page, they love what they see. So Google promotes the page.
So how do you improve your page’s dwell time? :
1. Web Design and Responsiveness:
The design is a very crucial part of a website. If you don’t have good design and layout, even if you have astonishing content, chances are your audience will leave your site.
If you’re looking for a good theme or design template for your website, your best bet is Themeforest. They have a lot of themes for all CMS and also responsive HTML5 templates. Investing in premium themes is worth it. Most premium themes are responsive and are SEO ready.
Generally, your website should have a good balance of colours, not too shouty and not dull.
Here’s a little advice on colours.
Remember that a high percentage of searchers are mobile users. Go for responsive and beautiful designs.
2. Create Great Content:
Content is king. No matter the number of SEO tips I give you, if you don’t have great content that will satisfy your readers, you’ve done nothing and all this won’t matter.
Providing an in-depth analysis/story about a certain topic makes your content comprehensive, detailed and worthy of being shared and linked to.
“Do a consumer research. Identify the trending topics/issues in your industry. Look for a highly searchable keyword, type it in the Google search bar and identify what’s missing out in every post on the search results. Create better content (more than the common how-to articles) by delivering your message with useful tips/ advice, examples (perhaps a case study), etc.” – SEO-Hacker.
More on content later…
3. Website Load Speed:
Like the design, it’s up to the load speed whether people will continue browsing a website or not. If you fail in this part, then don’t bother asking why your website’s dwell time is too low.
I’ve written one of the world’s most detailed guides on improving your website speed. Check it out to cut down your page load time. Every millisecond matters.
That’s it for Dwell Time. Let’s consider your Click Through Rate (CTR).
Click Through Rate :
Google Engineer Paul Haahr caused a stir in the SEO world when he put up this slide at a conference:
What this slide says is: “RankBrain sometimes ranks pages higher up than they “should” rank. And if that page gets an above-average CTR, we use that as a sign that the page should get a permanent ranking boost.”
This is reasonable. If lots of people click on a page it means they love the post and vice versa. So Google gives a boost to those posts with a high CTR.
So low CTR = low ranking.
The solution? The Click Magnet Method.
The Click Magnet Method
- I have used this method and my clicks rate instantly increase and double my organic traffic. Not only that, Dean from Backlinko also use the same method and his website move from number 12 to number 1 on Google in few days.
The CTR magnet method consists of three basic steps.
- Step 1: Find Adword ads.
- Step 2. Include words and phrases from Adword ads into your title and description tag.
- Step 3: Get more clicks.
Now let’s discuss each one :
Step 1: The first step is to find the Adword ads for your targeting keywords. Adword advertisers spent thousands of dollar for advertising for one main goal- to get CLICKS.
They’ve run multiple tests before arriving at their final results.
So let’s say you want to create an article centred around Hotel Bookings. Go to Google, search for the keyword. you’re likely to see ads filling up a high number of results. Study the ads; their title tags, their meta description. Find the Power words they make use of(more on power words later.).
As you can see in the image above, these ads contain some prominent words in common. Words like: Cheap Hotels, No Cancellation fees, etc.
Step 2: Include words and phrases from Adword ads into your title and description tag.
Once you’ve gotten these keywords being used. Add those words to your title tags and meta description.
Write a powerful title and description tag using the adword ads. Both the title and description tag of the ads were well optimized which is bringing a lot of clicks for the advertiser. If not, why would they be spending a lot of money without any result?
Step 3: Get more clicks.
Once you add all the word and phrases to the title and description and everything is done well, your page will increase in Google in a few days and find yourself in more click and more organic traffic.
Still receiving low Click Through Rates?
Here are some black hat SEO tips from the Wizard of Moz.
From the video above, The CEO of MOZ told his Twitter followers to search for a certain keyword which he ranked for and click on his results which was currently ranked at number 6. In 3 hours time, he started ranking at number one for that keyword.
Remember Rankbrain from earlier? Dwell time + CTR.
I ranked my post on Instagram marketing strategies from 8 to number 2 in less than 4 hours. In one Telegram group with over 500 SEOs in it. I convinced people to search for the keyword and click on my page. You can replicate this on your Facebook group, Page, Twitter etc.. Trust me, it works, at least for now.
One More Thing – Power Words.
Below are some phrases and words that are proven to increase your CTR. They are called Power Words.
Today,Right now,Instantly,Fast,Work quickly,Step-by-step,Easy,Quick,Simple etc
Factor 2: Comprehensive, In-Depth Content Wins :
Like I said early no matter the number of SEO tips I give you, if you write terrible content you’ll still fail. Sure, you might get a momentary boost especially with what I just showed you earlier. But in the long run, in 3 years to come, what keeps you up is great content.
People used keyword stuffing back then because they could predict Google. It just wanted to see some words stuffed into headings, title tags and meta description and BAM! it picks it up and ranks it.
Now, with ML, Google actually “reads” your content. Yeah, just imagine your high school teacher reading your assignments the next day after a holiday. haha.
So it judges by context. Is your article well written? Does it deliver what it promised via the title?
What makes great content? How do you create one? Here are some factors you must take note of.
First. your articles should be at least 2000 words long. Yes! When it comes to ranking, size actually matters.
You might have heard something contrary elsewhere, but according to a recent research, the longer the article, the better its chances of better ranking.
Longer articles are usually more in-depth – Like this one.
Factor 3: Add LSI Keywords to Your Article.
Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords are essentially keywords related to the keywords that you are searching for, and Google does this by using a system known as LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). In a nutshell, it is based on user search patterns and behaviour, how one keyword search is usually linked to another keyword search.
How do you find LSI keywords?
You can use a free tool called LSI graph. Just add your main keywords and you’ll receive lots of LSI keywords.
In the example above I used SEO tips for 2018 and it generated multiple LSI keywords for me. It could be anything else like Hotel Bookings.
Now all you need to do is to add any of these keywords to your content.
You can also use Google search to get your LSI keywords.
Just search for your target keyword. Then check out the “Searches related to…” section at the bottom of the search results.
Just add these keywords to your article to rank.
Bonus SEO Tips for 2018 :
Go Mobile – Responsive design :
Google announced last year that they are adopting a mobile-first algorithm. This means that they consider your mobile version of your website as the real version of your website.
Make use of responsive design. Forget the “m.yourdomain.com” make your website responsive across all platforms.
Get on Youtube – Youtube has become the 2nd largest search engine. Most internet users prefer a video explanation over text-based ones. Youtube videos are also highly optimized for SEO.
Few bloggers have adopted this and that’s a huge PLUS for you. Get on the market now that it’s still young.
Embed Videos to Your Articles – Embedding related videos to your articles can engage your user. It also increases your user’s Dwell Time.
Embed Infographics and well-designed images – Check out the image below.
